As parents (or adults that eat at work) we need to start taking more control over what our kids eat instead of schools. Have you seen the junk these cafeterias consider healthy and portioned properly? I don't like to point fingers because in all fairness our kids are making these choices on their own and need more guidance. When I was in middle school (leaving High School and College out because I skipped lunch during those days--what girl wants to have spaghetti sauce dripping on her shirt in front of her crush, ha!) and my friends and I would order the largest servings of curly fries, sodas from the vending machine and those huge soft pretzels that would rotate in the warmer like it was calling your name with its plentiful dipping condiments. I didn't know anything about portion sizes yet alone that grease on the lips means love handles on your hips.ย

There is a 2-cup portion compartment, 2 sides that can hold 1/2 cup servings and a 1 ounce compartment designed to hold your dressings, dips, and or desserts. What is even greater about this lunch box is that it is packed with a leakproof lid that seals all contents inside eliminating the annoyance of looking for lost lids. The only thing is that you shouldn't put water in any of the compartments but you can store snacks like applesauce and yogurt.

Q & A

  • Is the 2 cup portion compartment large enough to hold a standard size sandwich?

Yes, it will hold a standard pb&j sandwich, etc.

  • Is it easy for a young child to open and close?

Definitely user friendly for school children

  • Is this lunchbox good for adults as well?

Of course, it works great for packed lunches for work. Comes in multiple colors so the husbands don't need to be confined to a pink or purple--Unless they want that color. ๐Ÿ™‚

I really like how the Yumbox Lunch Box makes it simple to wash one container and store one container, and lastly manage one single lid. I don't know if you have read my other portion control container reviews you will know that I really hate dealing with tupperware lids and containers. For some strange reason I seem to lose every single lid like the socks in my dryer. If I'm even lucky enough to find a suitable lid the bottom container is missing in action. Also, if you pack spaghetti with acidic sauce be prepared to be stuck with a red stained tupperware container. The yumbox is more sotrage friendly and your child or yourself don't need to have to open several containers and ziplock bags in order to enjoy their meal.

Another reason I like this lunch box is because there is no measuring involved, anybody can eat regular (non diet) foods if they use portion control and this lunchbox will teach a child to know just by eyeballing their lunch that they have the correct servings if they were in a situation where they don't have the preportioned compartments to work with. Have you see kids meals at restaurants these days? (These days? Crap I'm making myself sound older than I really am ๐Ÿ™ย  ) they are now the size of what adult meals used to be a mere two decades ago.

We are eating too large of portions and our kids are watching this and thinking it is alright. If they are trained early in age about what is a correct amount this will guide them to a healthy adult lifestyle without being subjected to a life of yo-yo diets and dangerous fads. I really wish I learned portion control when I was younger then perhaps my man size spaghetti plates while pregnant would never have presented itself. Thankfully I've always been pretty active and could keep the weight off but when I was pregnant I was very limited on my activities and the scale proved to me that my portion sizes needed some serious adjustments if I (god forbid) get into another situation where my activity amount is limited I don't want to put my health at risk.
